In Science Class, the 7th graders are currently learning about the natural process of succession; which is nature's response to disturbances like logging, agriculture, and forest fires.
To study this concept first-hand, the students took a field trip to Sand Ridge State Forest in Forest City. They learned about logging, prescribed burning, and agricultural activities that have occurred there within the last few years.
"I think this moment in time is a unique opportunity to show them the different stages of succession, what types of tree and shrub species exist locally, and educate them about local biodiversity and natural history that many of us do not notice throughout our day to day lives," stated Mr. Leamon, Middle School Science Teacher.
